🌿 coffee varieties – heritage & hybrids

SL28 & SL34

Heritage varieties released by Scott Agricultural Laboratories (1930s–40s). Deep root structure, drought-tolerant. Tasting notes: Blackcurrant, blackberry, pomelo, bright citrus acidity, full velvety body.

Ruiru 11

Disease-resistant hybrid – resistant to Coffee Berry Disease (CBD) and Coffee Leaf Rust (CLR). High-density planting possible. Often grafted onto SL rootstock for best results.

Batian

Early maturing variety – crops after only 2 years. Named after Mt. Kenya's highest peak. Resistant to CBD and CLR. Growing popularity among farmers.

The Terroir

Red volcanic soils + temperate climate + frequent mists. Slow cherry development = complex flavors. Bright winey acidity, blackcurrant, citrus zest, velvety body.

⚙️ processing excellence – fully washed

  1. Hand-picking of ripe cherries – only deep red, perfectly ripe cherries
  2. Precision sorting & eco-pulper – rigorous cherry sorting at intake
  3. Fermentation in concrete tanks (12–24 hours, depending on temperature) – breaks down mucilage
  4. Washing & grading in pristine channels – separates by density
  5. Drying on raised African beds (10–20 days) – raked regularly, covered during hottest part of day and at night
  6. Final grading, cupping & export – strict quality control at every stage

Kaabirer works directly with 950+ active families, offering fair prices, soil‑health training, and women-led initiatives. Our cooperative invests in schools and wet-mill upgrades — every bean tells a story of dignity.

Kenya's Coffee Economy

Today, more than 600,000 smallholders farming fewer than 5 acres compose 99% of Kenya's coffee farming population. Their farms cover more than 75% of total coffee growing land and produce nearly 70% of the country's coffee. These farmers are organized into hundreds of Farmer Cooperative Societies (FCS), all of which operate at least one factory.

Government Partnership

In April 2020, the Nandi County Government distributed coffee seedlings to farmer cooperative societies across Tinderet, Emgwen, and Aldai sub-counties. Kaabirer was among the beneficiary cooperatives in Tinderet Sub-county, alongside Kapkiyai, Kibukwo, and Kabunyeria, strengthening the coffee sector and increasing productivity.
